Overview

La-related protein 4 (LARP4) is an RNA-binding protein and member of the La-related protein family. It contains a conserved La module—consisting of a La motif and an RNA recognition motif—that is capable of binding single-stranded poly(A) sequences at the 3' ends of mRNAs[1][2]. LARP4 interacts with poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) and participates in the regulation of mRNA stability, particularly by affecting the poly(A) tail length and protecting transcripts from deadenylation[1]. Overexpression of LARP4 increases mRNA stability, while depletion reduces translation and contributes to increased cell migration and invasion, especially in various cancer cell lines[2]. LARP4 mutations have been found in a broad range of cancers, with some mutations altering its RNA-binding properties or its regulatory capacity over cell morphology and motility[2]. It does not currently serve as a direct therapeutic target, but its role in controlling translation and cancer cell behavior makes it notable for molecular and cellular biology.
