Overview

Labile redox-active iron refers to a small, dynamic fraction of iron within cells or body fluids that is not tightly bound to proteins but is instead loosely associated with low-molecular-weight ligands. This pool of iron is characterized by its ability to readily participate in redox reactions and its amenability to exchange between different ligands. While essential for certain enzymatic functions, elevated levels can catalyze the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress and tissue damage. It is a key component in iron overload diseases and plays a role in infection risk. Labile iron levels are influenced by dietary intake, iron storage, and chelation therapies.
