Overview

The lacrimal punctum is a minute anatomical opening located on the medial aspect of the eyelid margin, specifically at the apex of the lacrimal papilla. It functions as the entry point for the nasolacrimal drainage system, collecting tears from the ocular surface and directing them into the lacrimal canaliculi (StatPearls, 2023). While not a molecular drug target like a receptor or enzyme, the punctum is a critical site for mechanical therapeutic interventions, particularly in the management of chronic dry eye disease. Procedures such as punctal occlusion using collagen or silicone plugs are employed to reduce tear drainage and increase the residence time of the tear film on the eye (American Academy of Ophthalmology, 2023). Conversely, punctal stenosis or obstruction can lead to epiphora, necessitating surgical dilation or punctoplasty. Therefore, while it lacks classical pharmacological interactions, its structural integrity and patency are vital for ocular health and the efficacy of topical ophthalmic treatments.
