Overview

Lactate dehydrogenase A chain (LDHA) is a critical enzyme that functions as a monomer within the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme complex. It catalyzes the reversible conversion of pyruvate to L-lactate, supporting glycolysis and ATP production, especially under low oxygen conditions. LDHA is predominantly expressed in muscle tissues, tumors, blood cells and heart muscle and its activity is regulated by substrate availability, pH levels, post-translational modifications, and NADH levels. Elevated LDHA levels are observed in many human cancers, making it a potential therapeutic target.
