LACTB2 antisense RNA 1 (LACTB2-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed antisense to the LACTB2 gene locus. Antisense noncoding RNAs regulate the expression of their corresponding sense genes through mechanisms such as RNA-RNA interactions, modulation of transcription, and alteration of mRNA stability or chromatin structure[2][3]. Although the biological functions of LACTB2-AS1 have not been specifically characterized, similar antisense RNAs are known to play important roles in gene regulation and cellular processes, particularly those related to their sense gene counterpart[2][3]. LACTB2 itself encodes a mitochondrial endoribonuclease involved in mitochondrial RNA turnover, essential for mitochondrial function[1][4], and antisense regulation could theoretically influence mitochondrial activity by modulating LACTB2 levels. However, direct experimental evidence for LACTB2-AS1’s functions or clinical relevance remains unavailable.
