Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is a Gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the lactic acid bacteria group. It was formerly classified under the genus Lactobacillus but has been reclassified based on genetic analysis. This species exhibits remarkable ecological versatility—found naturally on plants, fermented foods such as yogurt and sauerkraut, meats, cheeses—as well as transiently inhabiting the human gastrointestinal tract where it acts as a probiotic organism. L. plantarum ferments various sugars into primarily lactic acid but can also produce acetic acid and other metabolites depending on environmental conditions.[1] Its metabolic flexibility allows it to thrive across diverse environments including acidic pH ranges typical for fermented foods. Clinically, L. plantarum strains have been studied for their ability to alleviate symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome,[2] atopic dermatitis,[2] hypercholesterolemia,[6] ulcerative colitis,[6], among others—primarily through modulation of gut microbiota composition and local immune responses. This organism does not function like traditional drug targets such as receptors or enzymes; instead its therapeutic value lies in its live administration either via supplements or functional foods where it exerts beneficial effects through complex interactions within host microbial communities.[4][8]
As a probiotic: Competes with pathogenic bacteria for adhesion sites and nutrients; Produces antimicrobial substances that inhibit pathogens; Modulates host immune responses to reduce inflammation or enhance barrier function. As part of food fermentation: Converts sugars into lactic acid via fermentation pathways.
