While generally regarded as safe—earning GRAS status from regulatory agencies—certain strains can cause rare infections under specific conditions such as severe immunosuppression.[4] **Note:** "Lactobacilli" refers collectively to many bacterial species rather than a single molecule/receptor/protein.
