Lactobacillus jensenii is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic bacterium predominant in the vaginal microbial flora, accounting for up to 23% of vaginal lactobacilli in healthy women. It contributes significantly to the host’s defense by producing lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and other antimicrobial compounds (such as bacteriocins), which help maintain a low vaginal pH and inhibit the colonization and growth of potential pathogens, including Gardnerella vaginalis and Escherichia coli. L. jensenii also exhibits immunomodulatory properties, including downregulation of pro-inflammatory pathways, suggesting probiotic potential for maintaining vaginal and potentially intestinal health. It is not a classical therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme) but is of interest as a beneficial live biotherapeutic agent.
