The lambda light chain is one of the two types of immunoglobulin (antibody) light chains found in humans. Each antibody molecule consists of two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains, which are either both kappa or both lambda. The primary function of these light chains is to contribute to antigen recognition and binding as part of the antibody's variable region. Abnormal production or ratios can indicate plasma cell disorders such as multiple myeloma or AL amyloidosis. AL amyloidosis often involves overproduction and misfolding/aggregation of monoclonal lambda free light chains, leading to toxic amyloid fibril deposits in tissues.
