Laminins are a family of large, multidomain glycoproteins that are essential components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), particularly in basement membranes. They play critical roles in tissue architecture, cell adhesion, migration, differentiation, and signaling. They are heterotrimeric proteins composed of α, β, and γ chains, forming a cruciform structure. Laminins interact with cell surface receptors like integrins and dystroglycan to mediate cell adhesion and signaling. Defects in laminin genes can result in muscular dystrophies, junctional epidermolysis bullosa, and nephrotic syndrome.
