Overview

Laminin subunit beta-2 is a protein encoded by the LAMB2 gene and is a member of the laminin family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins, which are the main non-collagenous components of basement membranes. Laminins are heterotrimers made of alpha, beta, and gamma chains; the beta-2 chain (LAMB2) plays a critical role in the structure of the basement membrane and is particularly enriched in the neuromuscular junction, kidney glomerulus, and vascular smooth muscle. LAMB2 is involved in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, and organization into tissues, especially during embryonic development. Genetic mutations in LAMB2 are associated with Pierson syndrome, nephrotic syndrome type 5, ocular abnormalities, and synaptic congenital myasthenic syndromes. The protein is also a prognostic marker in certain cancers, such as kidney renal clear cell carcinoma and rectum adenocarcinoma.
