Overview

Laminin subunit gamma-1 (LAMC1) is a critical extracellular matrix glycoprotein that is an essential noncollagenous constituent of basement membranes. Laminins are heterotrimeric proteins comprised of alpha, beta, and gamma chains; LAMC1 encodes the gamma-1 chain, which is indispensable for the assembly and function of these networks. Laminin gamma-1 facilitates cell adhesion, migration, and organization into tissues, playing a vital role in tissue integrity and development, particularly during embryogenesis. Dysregulation or mutation of LAMC1 leads to a spectrum of diseases, including congenital myasthenic syndromes, junctional epidermolysis bullosa, and aberrant cancer cell spread and invasion, making it a relevant target and biomarker for therapeutic investigation. The protein functions by interacting with other basement membrane components, such as nidogen, and its proper expression is essential for organogenesis and maintenance of epithelial tissue architecture.
