LanC lantibiotic synthetase component C-like protein 3 (LANCL3) is a protein-coding gene product belonging to the LanC-like (LANCL) family, which is evolutionarily related to bacterial LanC cyclases involved in the modification of peptides, notably in the formation of lanthionine rings in lantibiotics. In humans, three paralogs exist: LANCL1, LANCL2, and LANCL3. LANCL3 is predicted to participate in peptide modification and carbohydrate metabolic processes and to localize to the plasma membrane, yet precise molecular function in human physiology and pathology remains uncharacterized. There is, as of current knowledge, no direct evidence of LANCL3 being a classical therapeutic target, drug receptor, or enzyme linked to established mechanisms of action, nor are there well-characterized drugs or clinical biomarkers associated with its modulation. LANCL3 is primarily of interest in basic molecular biology as a representative of the LanC-like eukaryotic protein family.
