Colon

Molecular classification
Organ, Gastrointestinal Tract
01

Overview

The colon, also known as the large intestine, is the final segment of the digestive system. It primarily functions to absorb water and electrolytes from indigestible food matter and to form and store feces before elimination. The colon is also a major site for fermentation of unabsorbed material by gut microbiota. Its unique physiology makes it an attractive target for local treatment of diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease via colon-targeted drug delivery systems (CDDS).
