Large intestine function

01

Overview

The large intestine is the final segment of the gastrointestinal tract responsible for absorbing remaining water and electrolytes from indigestible food matter, compacting waste into feces, and facilitating its excretion. Additional functions include absorption of certain vitamins produced by gut bacteria, fermentation of undigestible carbohydrates to short-chain fatty acids, immune modulation, and barrier maintenance. Dysfunction of these functions is implicated in disorders such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and infections[4][8][5][2]. Note: "Large intestine function" does not correspond to a single molecule, receptor, transporter, or enzyme, but rather summarizes physiological and cellular processes performed by this organ. For molecular targets related to these functions, refer to specific proteins (e.g., MUC2, sucrase-isomaltase, various transporters and receptors) inside colonic tissue[1][5].
