LAT1 (Large neutral amino acid transporter small subunit 1), also known as SLC7A5, is a sodium- and pH-independent transmembrane transporter responsible for the uptake of large neutral amino acids in exchange for intracellular amino acids. It forms a heterodimeric complex with CD98/4F2hc/SLC3A2 and is highly expressed in the blood-brain barrier, brain, placenta, activated T cells, and many cancer cells. LAT1 plays a crucial role in supplying essential amino acids to cells and serves as an entry route for drugs mimicking its natural substrates. Its role in tumor growth has made it an attractive target for anticancer therapies.
