Large ribosomal subunit protein mL38 (MRPL38) is a ribosomal protein encoded by the nuclear genome and imported into mitochondria where it functions as a component of the 39S large subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. Its primary role is as a structural constituent involved in mitochondrial translation, facilitating protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. MRPL38 is localized to the mitochondrion and the cytosol and is essential for proper function of mitochondrial ribosomes necessary for cellular energy production. There are no current indications that MRPL38 is considered a druggable target, nor is there evidence of direct involvement in human disease or therapeutic relevance based on current knowledge.
