It has lost stop codon specificity, which allows it to terminate mitochondrial translation in cases of abortive elongation. This protein functions as a peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase, hydrolyzing prematurely terminated peptidyl-tRNAs and recycling stalled mitochondrial ribosomes.
