Overview

Large ribosomal subunit protein mL63 (MRPL57) is a protein encoded by the nuclear genome that is imported into mitochondria and incorporated into the large 39S mitochondrial ribosomal subunit. It serves as a structural component essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis, playing a role in mitochondrial translation. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitochondrial ribosomes have a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio, lack 5S rRNA, and show considerable sequence divergence from their prokaryotic counterparts. MRPL57 is specific to animal mitoribosomes and is conserved across vertebrates. While its disruption or mutation may be linked to mitochondrial disorders, MRPL57 itself is not currently established as a direct therapeutic target, and there are no known drugs that interact with this protein[1][3][10][13].
