50S Ribosomal Protein L10 (L10)

Target
L10
Molecular classification
Ribosomal Protein
01

Overview

The bacterial 50S ribosomal protein L10, encoded by *rplJ*, is an essential scaffold component forming part of the stalk structure on the large ribosomal subunit. It orchestrates both structural assembly—by interacting early with rRNA—and dynamic regulation—by recruiting/stimulating translational GTPases critical for efficient protein synthesis. Its function extends beyond catalysis into self-regulation at both transcriptional/posttranscriptional levels through feedback mechanisms involving operon mRNA binding. Defects disrupt core cellular processes such as growth and division due to failed or inefficient translation machinery assembly/functionality.
