The large subunit ribosomal RNA pseudogene is a non-functional genomic segment derived from the large subunit (28S) rRNA gene. Pseudogenes, including rRNA pseudogenes, are typically characterized by mutations, insertions, or deletions that prevent normal processing or function. They do not encode proteins and are not transcribed in any meaningful way. The canonical LSU rRNA gene region codes for the RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit involved in peptide synthesis, but pseudogenes are inactive remnants. These sequences serve as molecular evolutionary markers and are important in phylogenetic analyses. They are not therapeutic targets, biomarkers, or involved in disease mechanisms and do not interact with drugs or have safety concerns. Their annotation in genomic databases sometimes leads to confusion, but they should not be considered as functional molecular targets.
