Overview

Late cornified envelope protein 1F (LCE1F) is a protein that belongs to the family of late cornified envelope (LCE) proteins, which are precursors of the cornified envelope in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. LCE1F is encoded by the LCE1F gene located in the LCE gene cluster on chromosome 1q21 within the epidermal differentiation complex. LCE1F expression is induced during late epidermal differentiation and is primarily involved in skin barrier formation and keratinization. LCE1F has also been identified as a direct downstream transcriptional target of the tumor suppressor p53 and may function as a potential tumor suppressor by interacting with protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), thereby modulating histone H3 arginine 8 methylation to suppress PRMT5 activity. While its central role is in skin biology, altered LCE1F expression may have implications in cancer biology, particularly in relation to p53 function. There are currently no established drugs that target LCE1F, and it is not widely considered a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
