Late cornified envelope protein 2A (LCE2A) is a precursor protein involved in the formation of the cornified envelope, a structure essential for maintaining the barrier function of the skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum. LCE2A incorporates into the cornified envelope late during the process of epidermal differentiation and cornification. It belongs to a cluster of proteins important for keratinization and skin barrier integrity. There is no evidence that LCE2A is itself a major therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
