Overview

Late cornified envelope protein 3E (LCE3E) is a structural protein of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, and a member of the LCE (late cornified envelope) protein family[2][5]. Expression of LCE3E is strongly upregulated in the skin after injury or in response to inflammatory cytokines, particularly in conditions such as psoriasis, where it participates in repair of the skin barrier[1]. While it does not serve as a direct pharmacological receptor or enzyme, deletions or dysregulation of genes in the LCE3 group (notably LCE3B and LCE3C, less directly LCE3E) have been associated with psoriasis risk[1]. LCE3E localizes to chromosome 1q21, within a gene cluster important for the skin barrier[2][3][5].
