Lateral cutaneous nerve of the femur (LFCN)

The lateral cutaneous nerve of the femur (LFCN) is a purely sensory nerve that arises from the posterior divisions of the L2 and L3 spinal nerve roots within the lumbar plexus (StatPearls, NBK541029). It travels through the pelvis, emerges under or through the inguinal ligament, and provides sensory innervation to the skin of the anterolateral thigh. While it is an anatomical structure rather than a molecular target like a protein or receptor, it is a critical site for clinical intervention in the management of meralgia paresthetica, a condition characterized by numbness and tingling in the outer thigh caused by nerve entrapment (NIH, NINDS). In pharmaceutical contexts, the LFCN is the anatomical site for regional anesthesia, where local anesthetics are applied to inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels on the nerve's axons to provide analgesia for surgical procedures or chronic pain (NYSORA). Clinicians frequently use ultrasound-guided techniques to visualize the nerve for diagnostic blocks or corticosteroid injections to alleviate inflammation and neuropathic symptoms.
