The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is a peripheral nerve that originates from the L2 and L3 spinal roots of the lumbar plexus [StatPearls, 2023]. It is a purely sensory nerve responsible for providing sensation to the anterolateral aspect of the thigh, extending from the greater trochanter to the knee [Wikipedia, 2024]. Clinically, the LFCN is most notable as the site of entrapment in meralgia paresthetica, a condition often caused by compression of the nerve as it passes under the inguinal ligament, leading to symptoms such as burning pain, numbness, and tingling [NIH/NINDS, 2023]. While the LFCN is not a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, it is a primary anatomical target for interventional pain management, including nerve blocks and steroid injections. Local anesthetics administered near the nerve, such as lidocaine, work by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels on the axonal membranes, thereby halting the transmission of pain signals to the central nervous system [NCBI, 2011]. Corticosteroids may also be applied to the nerve to modulate the inflammatory response in cases of chronic compression [StatPearls, 2023]. Understanding the anatomical variations of the LFCN is critical for biotech applications involving regional anesthesia and the development of neuromodulation devices for chronic pain.
Drugs do not target the nerve as a molecule; instead, local anesthetics block voltage-gated sodium channels on the nerve's axons to inhibit action potential propagation, while corticosteroids reduce inflammation and edema around the nerve at sites of compression [StatPearls, 2023].
