Overview

The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is a peripheral nerve that originates from the L2 and L3 spinal roots of the lumbar plexus [StatPearls, 2023]. It is a purely sensory nerve responsible for providing sensation to the anterolateral aspect of the thigh, extending from the greater trochanter to the knee [Wikipedia, 2024]. Clinically, the LFCN is most notable as the site of entrapment in meralgia paresthetica, a condition often caused by compression of the nerve as it passes under the inguinal ligament, leading to symptoms such as burning pain, numbness, and tingling [NIH/NINDS, 2023]. While the LFCN is not a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, it is a primary anatomical target for interventional pain management, including nerve blocks and steroid injections. Local anesthetics administered near the nerve, such as lidocaine, work by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels on the axonal membranes, thereby halting the transmission of pain signals to the central nervous system [NCBI, 2011]. Corticosteroids may also be applied to the nerve to modulate the inflammatory response in cases of chronic compression [StatPearls, 2023]. Mechanism of action
