Overview

LCT antisense RNA 1 (LCT-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA gene located antisense to the *LCT* locus. As with many antisense lncRNAs, LCT-AS1 regulates gene expression, including potential post-transcriptional regulation and gene silencing[1][3][5]. Studies indicate a role in regulating BMI1 via microRNA interaction, such as sponging miR-128-1-3p in Hirschsprung’s disease[3]. LCT-AS1 may also influence the *LCT* gene's function, affecting traits like lactose tolerance, although direct mechanistic links remain under investigation[5]. There is no current evidence that it serves as a direct target for pharmacological intervention, but its general class—antisense lncRNAs—is increasingly recognized for regulatory, epigenetic, and disease-associated roles[1]. No evidence suggests LCT-AS1 is a druggable target or is involved in receptor, enzyme, or transporter functions. Its modulation is mainly regulatory, through RNA-based mechanisms, and research is ongoing regarding broader disease or drug implications[1][3][5].
