LDL cholesterol synthesis refers to the endogenous production of cholesterol and its subsequent packaging into low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, which transport cholesterol from the liver to peripheral tissues. It is a complex multi-step pathway crucial for lipid metabolism and overall cardiovascular health. The pathway is tightly regulated, primarily at the HMG-CoA reductase step, to maintain cholesterol homeostasis. Disregulation leads to hypercholesterolemia and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. While the pathway itself is not a direct therapeutic target, enzymes in the pathway like HMG-CoA reductase are targeted.
