Overview

Leishmanolysin-like peptidase (LMLN) is a zinc-dependent metallopeptidase of the M8 family, encoded by the LMLN gene on human chromosome 3[1][3][5]. The protein is found in ring-like structures similar to invadopodia and is relocalized from intracellular sites to the leading edge in migrating cells, suggesting a role in cell migration and tissue invasion[5]. In Drosophila, a similar protein (“invadolysin”) has been implicated in mitotic progression, hinting at conserved cellular functions[1]. The best-characterized homolog, GP63, is a major surface protease and virulence factor in Leishmania parasites, where it contributes to pathogenicity and immune evasion; in humans, the precise physiological and pathophysiological roles of LMLN remain to be fully elucidated, but its molecular features indicate a likely involvement in processes requiring cell motility and invasion[1][3][5].
