Overview

The lens (crystalline lens) is a transparent, elastic, biconvex structure found behind the iris and in front of the vitreous body in vertebrate eyes[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. It consists of highly ordered fiber cells and a surrounding collagenous capsule, is held in position by zonular fibers connected to the ciliary body, and functions to transmit and focus light onto the retina to create clear images at different distances by changing shape through the process of accommodation. The lens contains exceptionally high concentrations of crystallin proteins, providing transparency and refractive properties, but is not innervated or vascularized, relying on aqueous humor for nourishment and waste removal. Pathologies of the lens include cataract and presbyopia, which are treated primarily through surgical intervention rather than molecularly targeted therapeutics.
