Overview

The lens capsule is a specialized, thick basement membrane that completely encloses the crystalline lens of the eye, providing structural integrity and acting as a semi-permeable barrier (StatPearls, 2023). It is primarily composed of Type IV collagen, laminin, and heparan sulfate proteoglycans, which are secreted by the underlying lens epithelial cells (NIH, 2022). Biologically, the capsule plays a vital role in accommodation by transmitting forces from the ciliary muscle via the zonules to alter the lens shape for focusing (Wikipedia, 2024). In clinical practice, it is a key factor in cataract surgery; complications such as Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) occur when residual cells proliferate on its surface (PubMed, 2021). While not a conventional molecular target for drugs, it is the site of action for surgical adjuncts like Trypan blue, which stains the capsule to facilitate capsulorhexis, and anti-metabolites like Mitomycin C used to prevent fibrosis (Journal of Ophthalmology, 2020).
