Overview

Lens intrinsic membrane protein 2 (LIM2) is an abundant eye lens-specific integral membrane protein found primarily at the junctions of lens fiber cells, where it contributes to organization and communication between cells[5][8]. LIM2 contains four transmembrane domains, is a substrate for cAMP-dependent protein kinase and protein kinase C, and is capable of binding calmodulin[1][2]. It is the second most abundant intrinsic membrane protein in lens fiber cells after aquaporin-0 and plays a significant role in maintaining lens transparency and normal lens homeostasis[3][4]. Genetic mutations in the LIM2 gene have been linked to inherited cataracts, highlighting its importance in lens development and disease[3][4]. There are no drugs known to target LIM2, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic target, but it plays a crucial structural and physiological role in the eye lens[1][5][8].
