Target intelligence / Profile preview
Leptospira interrogans serogroup Australis antigens are a collection of molecular components, primarily lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and outer membrane proteins (OMPs) such as LipL32 and LipL41, derived from the Australis serogroup of the pathogenic spirochete Leptospira interrogans (PubMed: 30214415). These antigens play a critical role in the pathogenesis of leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease characterized by symptoms ranging from mild fever to severe renal failure and jaundice (CDC, 2023). The Australis serogroup is one of the most prevalent groups associated with infections in both humans and livestock, particularly pigs and horses, where it can cause significant reproductive issues (StatPearls: Leptospirosis). In the context of immunology and pharmacology, these antigens serve as the primary targets for vaccine development, where they are used to elicit protective humoral and cellular immune responses (PubMed: 31454735). While antibiotics like doxycycline and penicillin are used to treat the infection by targeting bacterial protein or cell wall synthesis, the antigens themselves are the focus of diagnostic assays such as the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) (WHO, 2021). Understanding the structural variability of these antigens is essential for developing broad-spectrum vaccines, as immunity is often serogroup-specific.
Vaccines utilize these antigens to induce protective humoral immunity by generating neutralizing antibodies that promote opsonization and clearance of the spirochetes (PubMed: 31454735). Antibiotics treat the associated infection by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis or cell wall assembly, though they do not bind the antigens directly (StatPearls: Leptospirosis).
