Overview

Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae refers to a highly pathogenic strain of Leptospira, a corkscrew-shaped, obligate aerobic spirochete bacterium[1][7]. Leptospira interrogans is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions and is excreted in the urine of infected animals, especially rats, which act as reservoir hosts[1]. Human infection typically occurs via contact with contaminated water or soil through skin micro-abrasions. The bacterium invades the bloodstream and can cause severe systemic illness (leptospirosis) with multiorgan involvement, particularly damaging the liver and kidneys, and can lead to hemorrhagic complications and organ failure[8][7]. The bacterium has multiple virulence factors, including hemolysins and proteins involved in adhesion, invasion, and immune evasion[2][3]. Diagnosis relies on serology and PCR; treatment uses antibiotics such as penicillin, doxycycline, and tetracycline[7][8]. There is no human vaccine available, and control efforts focus on animal vaccination and rodent management.
