Leptospira interrogans serovar Bratislava antigens are specific molecular markers and structural proteins derived from the Bratislava serovar of the pathogenic spirochete Leptospira interrogans. These antigens, which include prominent outer membrane proteins such as LipL32, LipL41, and OmpL1, are critical for the bacterium's virulence, facilitating attachment to host extracellular matrix components and enabling evasion of the host's innate immune response (Adler & de la Peña Moctezuma, 2010; Picardeau, 2017). In the pharmaceutical industry, these antigens are primarily targeted for the development of prophylactic vaccines, particularly in veterinary medicine for dogs, horses, and swine, where serovar Bratislava is a frequent cause of reproductive failure and systemic disease (Haake & Levett, 2015). Vaccines containing these antigens work by stimulating the host's immune system to produce specific antibodies that neutralize the spirochetes upon exposure, thereby preventing clinical leptospirosis and reducing bacterial shedding in urine. While highly effective for prevention, these antigens also serve as diagnostic targets in the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), the gold standard for identifying the infecting serovar in clinical cases. Therapeutic challenges include the high degree of antigenic diversity among Leptospira serovars, necessitating the use of multivalent vaccine formulations to ensure broad protection.
