Overview

Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola antigens are a group of immunogenic proteins and surface components derived from the Canicola serovar of the pathogenic spirochete Leptospira interrogans (nih.gov, 1.1.1). These antigens include major outer membrane proteins (OMPs) such as LipL32, LipL41, and OmpL1, as well as Leptospiral immunoglobulin-like (Lig) proteins, which are critical for the bacterium's pathogenesis and host interaction (nih.gov, 1.3.3; frontiersin.org, 1.1.2). LipL32, the most abundant lipoprotein, is highly conserved among pathogenic Leptospira species and facilitates adhesion to host extracellular matrix components like laminin and collagen (scirp.org, 1.3.1). These antigens are the primary components of veterinary vaccines, such as Nobivac L4 and Vanguard L4, which are designed to induce protective humoral and cellular immunity against leptospirosis (msd-animal-health.co.in, 1.2.4; mdpi.com, 1.2.5). Leptospirosis is a significant zoonotic disease that can lead to severe renal and hepatic failure in both animals and humans (nih.gov, 1.4.2). In addition to their role in immunization, these antigens serve as critical targets in diagnostic assays, such as the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and ELISA, to detect host-produced antibodies (nih.gov, 1.3.3). The interaction between these antigens and the host immune system is the basis for both protective immunity and the serological diagnosis of the infection (researchgate.net, 1.3.2).
