Leucine-rich repeat and fibronectin type-III domain-containing protein 3 (LRFN3) is a cell surface adhesion molecule that mediates homophilic cell-cell adhesion in a calcium-independent fashion and promotes neurite outgrowth in neurons, particularly in the hippocampus. It has a predicted role in the regulation of presynaptic assembly and synaptic membrane adhesion and is located at the plasma membrane and presynaptic active zones. Mutations or dysregulation have been associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and familial adult myoclonic epilepsy 5.
