Leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 9 (LRRC9) is a human protein encoded by the LRRC9 gene. It features multiple leucine-rich repeats (LRR), a structural motif often associated with protein-protein interactions and signal transduction. LRRC9 lacks domains typical of canonical receptor, enzyme, or channel targets, and appears to function primarily as a multifunctional signaling adaptor. Bioinformatics analyses suggest it contains an atypical ADP-ribosyltransferase-like domain but lacks the residues necessary for enzymatic activity, suggesting a “pseudoenzyme” function. It is predicted to be involved in mRNA splicing via the spliceosome, may bind U2 snRNA, and is localized to the cytoplasm. Population genomics implicates LRRC9 in developmental and reproductive regulation (notably in some fish species), and it may serve as a link between environmental/pathogen detection and cell signaling in processes such as immune defense and development. There are currently no established roles for LRRC9 in human pathology, no drugs targeting it, and no evidence it is used as a biomarker or presents notable safety/therapeutic challenges.
