Leukocyte activation refers to the process in which white blood cells are stimulated by a variety of external signals—such as pathogens, cytokines, and tissue damage—causing them to change behavior and morphology and to carry out specialized functions essential for immune defense. This process involves upregulation of adhesion molecules (integrins, selectins), increased cellular communication and migration, phagocytosis, cytokine, and antibody production, and ultimately coordinates responses to infection, inflammation, and tissue injury. Dysregulation of leukocyte activation leads to diseases such as immunodeficiencies, autoimmunity, and chronic inflammation.
