Leukocyte adhesion refers to the process by which white blood cells (leukocytes) attach to and interact with the vascular endothelium. This is a critical step in the immune response, particularly during inflammation, as it enables leukocytes to exit the bloodstream and migrate into tissues where they are needed to combat infection or injury. It involves sequential steps like tethering/rolling, activation, firm adhesion, and transmigration, mediated by selectins, integrins, and immunoglobulin superfamily members.
Blocking selectin or integrin function can reduce inappropriate tissue infiltration by immune cells in inflammatory diseases.
