Overview

Leukocyte localization (commonly called leukocyte extravasation, leukocyte adhesion cascade, or diapedesis) describes the dynamic multi-step process by which leukocytes exit the bloodstream and migrate into tissues in response to signals such as infection or injury. This process is essential for innate and adaptive immune responses, and involves tightly regulated interactions between leukocytes and vascular endothelial cells through adhesion molecules (selectins, integrins), chemokines, and cytoskeletal remodeling. Dysregulation of leukocyte localization is central to a range of inflammatory, autoimmune, and cardiovascular diseases, and individual molecules in this cascade are established therapeutic targets; however, "leukocyte localization" itself is not considered a molecular drug target.
