Leukocyte migration is the movement of leukocytes (white blood cells) within or between different tissues and organs in the body. This process is fundamental to both innate and adaptive immune responses, enabling leukocytes to reach sites of infection, injury, or inflammation where they perform critical functions such as phagocytosis, antibody production, secretion of inflammatory mediators, and tissue surveillance. It involves a multi-step process of chemoattraction, rolling adhesion, tight adhesion, and transmigration/diapedesis, regulated by molecules such as selectins, integrins, ICAM/VCAM family members, and chemokines.
