Overview

Leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma (LR-PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy derived from a patient's own blood, characterized by a concentration of platelets and leukocytes significantly higher than baseline levels (PubMed: 33806511). It is not a single molecular target but a complex mixture of growth factors, cytokines, and bioactive proteins that work synergistically to promote tissue repair and regeneration (PubMed: 29073312). Upon delivery to injured tissue, platelets release essential factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), which stimulate cell proliferation and collagen synthesis (StatPearls: NBK531487). The inclusion of leukocytes provides antimicrobial properties and modulates the inflammatory environment, although it may also lead to a transient increase in local inflammation (PubMed: 25848901). LR-PRP is primarily used in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including chronic tendinopathies and osteoarthritis, where it aims to accelerate the natural healing process (PubMed: 31612758). As an autologous product, it minimizes the risk of immune rejection, though its clinical efficacy is often influenced by the specific preparation technique and the patient's systemic health (PubMed: 28249471).
