Leukotriene production refers to the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, a family of eicosanoid inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid. These lipid molecules are primarily produced by leukocytes and other immune cells in response to various stimuli including infection, tissue injury, allergens, and exercise. Key enzymes involved include phospholipase A2, 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), FLAP, LTA4 hydrolase, and LTC4 synthase. The pathway produces LTB4 and cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4), which mediate inflammation, immune cell recruitment, bronchoconstriction, and vascular permeability. Therapeutic targeting of this pathway is used in the management of asthma and allergic diseases.
