Leukotriene synthesis is the biochemical pathway responsible for the production of leukotrienes, potent inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid. The pathway involves the enzymes 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (FLAP), leukotriene A4 hydrolase, and leukotriene C4 synthase. The main products are LTB4 and cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4), which mediate various inflammatory responses, including bronchoconstriction and neutrophil chemotaxis.
