Levodopa (L-DOPA)

Target
L-DOPA
Molecular classification
Amino acid, Phenethylamine, Catecholamine, Prodrug
01

Overview

Levodopa (L-DOPA) is a naturally occurring amino acid and the metabolic precursor to dopamine. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine in the brain, increasing dopamine levels. It is primarily used to treat Parkinson’s disease to alleviate motor symptoms. It is usually administered with a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor such as carbidopa or benserazide.

Other names
L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine

Mechanism of action

Converted to dopamine in the brain, acting as a non-selective agonist at dopamine receptors (D1, D2, D3, D4).
