Overview

The Lewis B antigen (Le^b) is a carbohydrate blood group antigen belonging to the Lewis blood group system. It is a glycan structure expressed on glycolipids and glycoproteins, found on red blood cells (adsorbed from plasma) and in various body fluids and tissues. Le^b synthesis requires functional FUT2 (Secretor gene) and FUT3 (Lewis gene) enzymes. While anti-Le^b antibodies can develop, they are usually clinically insignificant.
