LGALS8 antisense RNA 1 (LGALS8-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene, located on chromosome 12, functioning primarily as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sponging microRNAs such as miR-885-3p and miR-125b-5p[1][3]. This regulatory mechanism prevents these miRNAs from inhibiting their target genes, leading to increased expression of genes associated with cancer cell growth, proliferation, migration, invasion, angiogenesis, and reduced apoptosis[1][2][3]. LGALS8-AS1 expression is significantly upregulated in tumors such as non-small cell lung cancer and breast cancer and has been validated as a marker for high metastatic potential and poor prognosis in these diseases[1][3]. Functionally, LGALS8-AS1 mediates cancer progression via the miR-885-3p/FSCN1 axis in NSCLC and the miR-125b-5p/SOX12 axis in breast cancer, also activating key pathways such as PI3K/AKT signaling[1][3]. As such, LGALS8-AS1 is considered a promising therapeutic target and biomarker in oncology research, although clinically approved drugs directly targeting it have not been reported[1][2][3].
