Lice Exoskeleton

Molecular classification
Structural Component, Lipid Barrier
01

Overview

The exoskeleton of lice is a multi-layered structure composed primarily of chitin, proteins, and lipids. Its critical function is to provide a protective barrier against the external environment, prevent desiccation, and facilitate muscle attachment. The outermost layer, the epicuticle, contains a waxy hydrocarbon layer essential for waterproofing. Disruption of this layer leads to uncontrolled water loss and rapid death, making it a viable antiparasitic target, especially for lice resistant to neurotoxic insecticides.
