Target intelligence / Profile preview
Ligilactobacillus salivarius W57 (formerly Lactobacillus salivarius W57) is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming probiotic bacterium belonging to the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) family. It is a well-characterized strain frequently included in multispecies probiotic formulations, such as Ecologic Barrier, designed to support intestinal health and the gut-brain axis. The primary biological function of L. salivarius W57 involves the reinforcement of the intestinal epithelial barrier by modulating the expression of tight junction proteins, thereby reducing paracellular permeability (often referred to as "leaky gut"). Additionally, it exhibits potent immunomodulatory effects by shifting the cytokine profile toward an anti-inflammatory state, specifically by increasing IL-10 production and suppressing pro-inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha and IL-6. In clinical settings, this strain has been investigated for its potential to alleviate symptoms of migraine, depression, and inflammatory bowel diseases by mitigating systemic inflammation originating from the gut. While it is generally recognized as safe (GRAS), its interaction with antibiotics can diminish its efficacy, and it should be used with caution in severely immunocompromised patients.
Enhancement of intestinal tight junction integrity and modulation of cytokine production via Toll-like receptor signaling.
